Spanish scientists have successfully eliminated in mice a rare skin disease characterized by the appearance of erosions in the mouth and blisters on the dermis. How? With two drugs that are currently listed in other disorders, such as some cancers.

This is the pemphigus vulgaris and currently the only existing treatment are the cortisone. “In high doses have significant side effects. While curbing the disease, the risk of complications is high: infections, broken bones, diabetes …”, says Agustin Spain, head of the Department of Dermatology, University Clinic of Navarre and one of the authors of the study.

Vultar Pemphigus is an autoimmune disease that manifests in the skin anywhere on the body and mucous membranes in the form of erosions and blisters. Experts say not only causes pain, can also lead to some disease. Depending on the affected areas, the patient will have different difficulties. For example, in the nasal mucosa, bleeding occurs frequently and in the mouth, can prevent swallowing.

Although its prevalence is low (20 new patients each year), could cause death if “is widespread in different parts of the body due to infection and dehydration resulting from the rupture of the blisters,” the authors explain in their article.

The severity of the disease itself and the limitations of medication are the reasons why in their day started this research, published in ‘Experimental Dermatology’. To carry out those responsible for this work have worked on newborn mice.

“It’s about playing the disease in mice by injecting antibodies obtained from patients,” says Maider Pretel Irazábal, Department of Dermatology and Venereologica Medical Surgical Clinic University of Navarra. The next step was to treat them with drugs in test: erlotinib (suitable for some types of cancer) or rapamycin (used in transplants). “In both cases, pemphigus vulgaris, and ceases to be visually displayed either at the molecular level. Completely block the disorder with no side effects,” says Dr. Spain.
An autoimmune disease

To understand how these drugs act in the mice with this rare skin disease, before it is important to know more about the mechanism of it. Being an autoimmune disease, patients who suffer from abnormally produce antibodies that act against some proteins of the skin, whose function is to keep the cells attached to the dermis. As a consequence, these cells separate and form blisters.

According to experts, yet little is known about how it is developed pemphigus vulgaris in man. “In this investigation, we discovered that the molecular pathways that are activated by this metabolic disorder which could have a key role in other diseases such as certain types of cancer.”

On the one hand, rapamycin inhibited mTOR kinase (a type of enzyme) to block the immune system of patients and get so they do not reject the transplanted organs, especially kidneys.

The second drug, Erlotinib, blocks other kinases (HER) that are activated in some cancers and also in pemphigus vulgaris.

“Precisely because the HER pathway and mTOR are activated in the cells of the skin of diseased mice when administered earlier drugs, the skin disorder is completely eliminated,” concluded Dr. Spain.

For the authors of this research, “this new application opens new possibilities in the treatment of pemphigus vulgaris. To have found in mice is a preliminary step to later remove people.”

Given these results, the scientific journal that echoes the research also published an editorial written by a group of experts from several countries, praising the work and highlight its implications: “create new treatment options and new channels of research “.

A year ago, Mariam Staford Bandara, escaped death and managed to free themselves from their attackers. But he lost both hands and is now disabled.

Mariam was born albino in Tanzania, a country where some believe that the potions made from body parts of albinos bring good luck. It is estimated that over the past two years have been killed 53 people with this disease.

Mariam dared to denounce their attackers, who wanted to kill her, and had lived hitherto protected by the government. But just to inform you that no longer enjoy government protection and should return to his village where he was assaulted a year ago, as reported by the BBC.

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, has launched a campaign to end this cruel belief. A couple of weeks ago, three men were sentenced to death accused of killing an albino girl 14.

The medical staff of the Social Security clinic peripheral colony Tepeaca weekend reported an increase in patients with respiratory diseases.

Karla Mejia, in charge of the outpatient area, reported that only the weekend were treated about 200 patients between adults and children with common colds.

“We are taking patients with acute respiratory episodes as common colds, faringeoamígdalitis that are aggravated by rainy weather situation,” Mejia said.

He said the increasing influx of patients are children.

Other conditions for which have increased consultations at the clinic are diseases of the skin.

“They come with many children lipétigo ie bumps on the skin, and are treated with various medications given them,” he said.

Most adult patients attending outpatient urinary tract infections, according to Mejia said.

Two general practitioners to those entitled to attend each clinic peripheral weekends.

In the Rivas

Many patients with symptoms of respiratory illness came to the hospital emergency room Mario Rivas.

Medical staff reported that people treated showed no severe categories, but common flu who were given medication and were sent home. Physicians assigned to the filter which treats patients with suspected influenza A/H1N1 reported that since last week reported no new suspected cases. Nicholas Montes, director of Rivas, urged people to continue with preventive measures. “There are fears that next month there is a second wave of the disease because the rainy season and temperature changes are already being made,” he said.

The staff of the emergency room of a hospital’s internal medicine Mario Rivas reported yesterday income of a person suspected of dengue.

The patient was identified as Aquino Denis Rivera, 20, resident in Chamelecon sector, one of the places where the majority of cases reported in the city.

“This is the second time I come to the hospital. The week before I came and gave me some medicine and I’m back because I still have discomfort, “Rivera said.

About 10 percent of the population have rosacea, a skin disease that is characterized mainly by redness, dilation of small blood vessels of the face and in severe cases by changes in the appearance and size of the nose .
The redness of the skin does not always respond to a mere blush of timidity, but in many cases due to rosacea, a condition which although not dangerous from a medical standpoint, negatively affects quality of life of those who suffer.
Rosacea responds well to treatment if carried out regularly and avoid the trigger factors.
Rarely goes away by itself, can last many years and worsen without treatment and can have a major impact on the social, emotional and labor who suffers.
Numerous scientific studies have shown that skin conditions, especially those that appear in visible areas of the body such as face, can cause depression, anxiety, insecurity and social isolation.
“Many patients report changes in their social life due to the appearance of rosacea, to the point of preventing or attend very heated indoors, or eat certain foods or drinks, as there is difficulty to neutralize redness and this affects the confidence and self esteem, “said Monica Ibarra dermatologist.
A survey by the Society of the United States Rosacea (National Rosacea Society) argues that over 76 percent of rosacea patients suffer from low self esteem and lack of confidence and many report that this leads them to avoid public contact or social activities.
Moreover, about 70 percent of people with severe rosacea, states that are adversely affected in the professional field and nearly 30 percent have even lost jobs because of their condition.
Rosacea primarily affects young adults but can reach up to 70 people or 80 years, appears on any skin type, but is more frequent in those with fair skin, and while it is more common in women, men tend to be more severe.
“The family history is also important, as 30 percent,” she added.
The disease can be mild, where there is a tendency to blush easily and persistent redness in the midface area, moderate when there are small addition of a red raised lesion on the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin.
It can also be severe when there is an enlargement of the sebaceous glands of the nose (rounded, enlarged and red changing the aesthetic appearance of the patient) and sometimes the cheeks determining irregular thickening of the tissue. Rosacea occurs particularly severe in males and an increase in the size of the nose (called rhinophyma).
The redness, similar to blush or sunburn occurs because a large amount of blood flowing into the blood vessels of the face and these are dilated.
As a result of blood flow, eventually, the skin becomes inflamed and you may see pimples on the face that may be papules (small elevations, red and solid) or pustules (as in the juvenile acne with pus).
For this reason, many times you call rosacea “adult acne”, but the difference with this is that no comedones.
Small dilated blood vessels of the face become visible over time, may have the appearance of fine red spots or wavy lines similar to the legs of a spider.
“They appear on the skin altered, some spider veins (telangiectasia), papules, pustules, pimples, nodules or lesions and then deeper, often accompanied by edema or swollen skin sensation in some cases there are symptoms of ocular irritation conjunctival, “the dermatologist.
Dermatology – atopic dermatitis: the importance of treatment

Atopic dermatitis: the importance of treatment

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopy is a complex disease that affects several parts of the body. Consequently there is a high risk of problems in the respiratory and digestive systems, and particularly of the skin. Younger children are most affected by this type of pathology.

Dr. M ª Asunción Vicente, pediatric dermatologist at St. John of God Hospital in Barcelona, believes that atopy is only a skin disease. In fact, what we are talking about is a constitution of the person, how to react to the outside world. The atopic person lives in a world where you have to battle with agents that affect you as not all react the same. Who overreacts a person is likely to be atopic.

Atopy is a rather unknown at street level. The form has to manifest itself is through itching and eczema, in addition, a very dry skin. For younger children, including infants, irritations appear on face and hands, and the creases of the arms. However, these symptoms may be aggravated causing vomiting, diarrhea and even bleeding. A child suffering from atopic dermatitis may develop a food allergy, in addition to being more inclined to be asthmatic.

The treatment must give to the atopic dermatitis must be integral. Therefore it is important to explain the disease to parents and let them know that as long as they remain a necessary minimal care, will tend to cure. What also needs to make clear is that treatments do not cure, but which are beneficial and therefore the patient will improve and no longer has eczema. Pro Therefore, we have a chronic illness.

The areas of the folds of the arms and legs, and behind the knees, head and neck are the areas where the itch is more common, becoming unbearable. The child can not keep from scratching and that is a danger because it enters a vicious circle: the itching causes scratching, and scratching the itch increases. Accordingly and produce wounds that can lead to infection.

Atopic dermatitis, as indicated at the beginning, is a constitutional feature with which they are born. This is a familial disease with high incidence as a child with atopic one parent has a 40% chance of having the disease. When both parents are suffering from the disease, the odds are multiplied by two.

To take control of atopic dermatitis, there are tools that help improve the quality of life of children who suffer. Parents should be aware in the first

Today we celebrate the “World Day for Breast Cancer” and what is sought at this time is to raise awareness among all women, about the importance of prompt diagnosis to eradicate this disease which may have provided remedy is made to time.

It seems impossible but still need to spread the need for all women to make their annual gynecological examinations, including mammography, breast cancer is a disease that every day takes the lives of many women of all ages, although only 6 % of cases occur in children under 35 years, being more likely in people over 40 years.

Breast cancer is the most common tumor in the female population. In recent years its incidence has increased significantly.

As you can detect and present breast cancer

Breast cancer can present as a lump that is felt by the doctor or the patient herself. Not all lumps are cancerous. The skin changes or nipple may also warrant medical attention. It is important to consult your doctor immediately if you discover:

Any new lump, this may not be painful or tender to palpation.

• Unusual thickening of your breasts.

• A sticky or bloody discharge coming from the nipples.

• Any change in the skin of your nipples or breasts such as puckering or dimpling.

• An unusual increase in the size of a breast.

• One breast unusually lower than the other.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease that affects one in three women and one in twelve men, according to statistics from the World Health Organization.

The commemoration of the International Osteoporosis Day October 20 each for disseminating information about the disease and promote prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this disease worldwide.

The International Anti Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF by its initials in English) last year launched a campaign which will run until 2010, called “Your bones do not speak, speak for them,” which seeks to create a change in health policy on the disease.

According to William Henderson, secretary of the Venezuelan Association of Menopause and Osteoporosis (SOVEMA), in Bolivar state there are no programs to combat this evil, but admitted that the condition is recognized as a public health problem.

He claimed that “most people with this disease are treated in private health facilities, at the suggestion of doctors, or when they have serious problems.”

The disease
According to Herrera, osteoporosis strikes people who have lost bone mineral density leading to an alteration of the microstructure of bone and its strength.

He explained that this loss is a consequence of a normal metabolic process in the body. “The bones have two cells, ones that build, and others that decalcification, these are the osteoclasts that eat the old bone and osteoblasts that renew that bone, so that creates a new bone structure, this renewal of bone, on the contrary of what is thought to imagine it as a static body still serving only cold basement for insertion there muscles and other organs, has a high metabolism that are constantly renewing itself, building itself.

Herrera noted that between 20 and 30 years establishing a balance between these processes and is there when it reaches the highest peak and thereafter begins to “soften and lose bone mineral density, which translates into a loss of bone microarchitecture, which results in fractures, not strong impacts, but by slight impact on healthy bone should not transcend.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of this disease is hampered by the absence of a symptom picture to detect and attack, making it presents a disadvantage when it comes to detect, so the only way to determine it is performing a bone density test or already has fracture occurred.

Bone densitometry measures the density has been lost and, according to Herrera, “must be done in a axial, that is to be measured at the lumbar spine and the upper end of femur”.

He dismissed the effectiveness of peripheral densitometry, commonly performed in public sessions, arguing that this is evidence that “serve only to screening for the disease, has no diagnostic value, much less a value to indicate treatment.”

Multiple factors
The specialist described the disease in two types, primary, which appears with the passing of time, with greater incidence in women and especially in postmenopausal women, primarily caused by lack of estrogen, coupled with other risk factors such as lack of physical exercises or sedentary lifestyle, heredity. “The race, Caucasian or Asian person they have much higher risk than those with dark skin, eating habits.

On the other hand, the secondary is one that is always accompanied by other types of disease and is linked to drugs that are supplied on the basis of these diseases, including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.

“The responsibility of the community is not demonstrated in the death of five horses that were stricken by the virus rhinopneumonitis, at the riding of Gravelines. The center had been placed in quarantine for several weeks in July-August to reduce the risk of contagion.

Of the five horses died, four belonged to private owners, which questioned the appropriateness of claiming compensation for damage suffered. But the insurer was clear: it is the owner of the horse to decide whether or not to purchase insurance for horse mortality. However, none of the equestrian center, not even the town of Gravelines, had assured his cavalry against such a risk, in theory low: “You really have horses that are racing and worth a fortune to take This insurance is sighs Ryckembusch Fabiola, who lost his mare, Engineering. We do not think about it, a virus. She reportedly died in an accident, I would not say anything … The owner, still reeling from the loss of his only horse, his horse had praised the center for the summer and included on the lease for a small compensation for the mayor, at least for veterinary costs incurred. Wrongly. The contract says that the borrower “shall, at its sole expense (…) horse care, food, care (…), except wholesale veterinary risks. “The equine herpes virus, of course, was one.

“We tried to best manage the situation, said Philip Lot, director of sports. The municipality has supported the vaccination of the entire cavalry and made available to center staff, who sometimes had to stay overnight to ensure the horses. He adds: “For the mayor, the case is closed. • E. J.

Self-medication does not yet won the French

Cold, cold sores, headaches, stomach problems … To cure the ills of the most benign, many French spin to the pharmacist without going through the box doctor. More than 300 medicines, available without prescription and not reimbursed, are now counter. The decree establishing the free access to products known as self-medication is released June 30, 2008, paving the way to 269 allopathic specialties, 18 specialty herbal and homeopathic medicines 26.

About 54% of pharmacies in France (there are 24 000) offer drugs for free service, according to information released at the symposium on self-medication, held in early October in the Senate.

The France is one of the OECD countries where drug expenditures are highest. However, a French spends 27 euros for self-medicate, as against 40 euros for an Englishman or an Italian and more than 60 euros for a German, according to Vincent Cottard, president of the French pharmaceutical industry for self-medication responsible (AFIP). The Ministry of Health would be a good eye on the French spend more on self-medication, which would reduce the deficit of health insurance.

“We’re very vigilant on the references, the dosages … In particular, any drugs newly arrived, or to the pediatric population,” observes Fabienne Bartoli, deputy director of the French Agency for Safety of Health Products ( Afssaps). Twenty fact sheets on common diseases (diarrhea, headaches, cold sores …) have been developed by Afssaps.

“The question is whether the pharmacist is a drug dealer or a healthcare professional. We chose the second option,” insisted Isabelle Adenot, Chair of the National Order of Pharmacists. Even echo for Gilles Bonnefond, Deputy Chairman of the Trade Union of pharmacists (USPO): “Beware of free service. There are those who see open access as a mechanism of consumption. There is a choice: “I do not need diagnosis, I go to the pharmacy and ask advice.” This pattern then we seek to emphasize.

“Self-medication is not an end in itself, improve the management of the patient must be strengthened. Therapeutic education is the backbone of an efficient development”, says Professor Alain Baumelou, head of division public health assessment and health products at the Pitie-Salpetriere, and coauthor with Professor Alain Coulomb report on self-medication in France.

What elements are involved in the choice of the pharmacist? “The choice is based on the properties of therapeutic drugs but also in terms of customer demand, facilities for controlling a particular medication and … the financial margin,” said Jean-Francois Bergmann, head of department of internal medicine at the Lariboisière hospital. “The free access would have an opportunity to put before the pharmacy counter drugs for which efficacy was the most important. This was not always the case. In addition, products are old enough free although their effectiveness is less obvious, “says Bergmann.

While the role of pharmacists is valued, “they do not necessarily ask people why they want this or that drug, Doliprane or aspirin,” says Bergmann.

The reserves exist. “The danger in self-medication is underdosing or overdosing of medication, or let it evolve disease undiagnosed …”, tempers Bruxelle Jean, president of the French Society for Study and Treatment of Pain (SFETD). “We did go wrong to the idea that a nonprescription drug is safe. The winner is the laboratory and not the patient,” adds Dr. Savior Boukris, author of these drugs that make us sick ( ed. the Cherche-Midi, 18 euros). “Self-medication raises more questions on the side of patient groups that enthusiasm,” observes Sylvain Fernandez-Curiel, Head of Mission Health Collective Interassociatif Health (CISS). Transparency on prices leave something to be desired.

“Certainly, any medication can have side effects, but more than a year after the free access we have had no reports of risk, no serious adverse events”, reassures Ms. Bartoli.

The medical desertification will also reinforce this phenomenon. To Mr. Bonnefond, “we must restructure the provision of care. We need physicians for palliative care, chemotherapy … more than a cold or diarrhea.

While Ingrid Coronado 10 months left to serve his family, he never stopped to think ahead, and therefore plans to launch a small business that sell creams and reductive systems. “That time I enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed being with Fer, with Luciano Emiliano and actually changed our house because we moved and the four together, then have months in which he was supposedly resting, I’m also putting together a business where we’re going to sell anti-stretch systems and reductive systems for men and women, “forward Ingrid.

“It was so funny, because I had a shop where my cream commanded to make anti-stretch and made some for my friends, and like them are famous, when asked what cream is placed, said ‘I was sent Ingrid’. The People started asking a lot and I decided to talk to the pharmacy to get me the maquilas. ”

After the birth of Lucian, the public saw that the driver looked radiant and hot body, so they asked the “recipe”. Thus was born the idea of sharing its “secret” of beauty.

“It’s like my secret led to the door of your home. It is a complete system, I do think that to avoid streaks or lose weight, a cream is not going to do any good, for a system to serve you needs to be accompanied several tips, what to do, what to eat, what I want is that this will serve the people by ensuring their health, this is a healthy way, “he said.

Also, will also release a reduction system which consists of homeopathic drops and a gel that helps skin is reaffirmed, all accompanied by a manual feed, exercise and care that has been advised by people expert in each topic.

Ingrid said that the products are sold through telemarketing and the Internet, although its official site is still under construction.
